Rich and creamy homemade hot cocoa

Homemade Hot Chocolate Mix

8 qt box dry milk
1 canister Hershey’s dark cocoa powder
15 oz chocolate creamer
1 lb powdered sugar

Mix all ingredients in a large container. Stir or shake to thoroughly mix.

To make a glass of hot cocoa, combine 1/3 to ½ cup of the mix with 1 cup of hot water. Top with marshmallows or whip cream and enjoy!

Fruitcake Cookies

Holiday fruitcake that you can't get rid of wouldn't be a problem if it existed in cookie form - this is why we invented Fruitcake Cookies! Why didn't anybody think of bite-sized fruitcake before?

Ingredients

1 pound candied mixed fruit, diced (see Tip)
2 cups chopped pecans
2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
¹/4 cup (1/2-stick) butter, softened
1 cup packed light brown sugar
2 eggs
¹/4 cup milk
1 tablespoon baking powder
¹/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
¹/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Coat cookie sheets with nonstick cooking spray.
In a large bowl, combine the candied fruit, pecans, and 1/2 cup flour; toss until the fruit and pecans are evenly coated then set aside.
In another large bowl, cream the butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Beat in the eggs and milk. Add the remaining 1-1/2 cups flour, the baking powder, cinnamon, and nutmeg, and beat until well blended.
Stir in the fruit mixture; mix well and drop by rounded teaspoonfuls 1 inch apart onto the cookie sheets. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until golden. Remove to a wire rack to cool completely.

Princess Ornaments

Here is one of the Princess ornaments that I have been working on.

They were very easy to make. I bought a few ornament shaped balsa wood blanks. I then traced one around a picture from some wrapping paper that I had. You can also use a picture from a Christmas card. I used mod podge to adhere to the wood. Let dry add a coat on top. Let dry again than mod podge the back and use glitter or glitter snow. I used glitter snow. Attach a piece of ribbon to hang and your done.
TIP: Make sure to allow for enough dry time in between each step.

Apple-Spice Cake - Diabetic

Subtly spiced with cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, each cake square is chock full of chopped apple.

SERVINGS: 9 servings

Nonstick cooking spray
3/4	cup all-purpose flour
1/2	cup white whole wheat flour
1/4	cup flax seed meal
1	teaspoon baking powder
1	teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2	teaspoon baking soda
1/2	teaspoon ground ginger
1/4	teaspoon salt
1/8	teaspoon ground cloves
1	egg, lightly beaten
1	6-ounce carton plain low-fat yogurt
1/3	cup packed brown sugar or brown sugar substitute* equivalent to 1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4	cup unsweetened applesauce
3	tablespoons vegetable oil
1	tablespoon molasses
1	large apple (such as Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Gala), cored and finely chopped (1 cup)
2/3	cup frozen light whipped dessert topping, thawed

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat an 8¿¿8¿¿2-inch baking pan with cooking spray; set aside.

2. In a large bowl, stir together all-purpose flour, white whole wheat flour, flax seed meal, baking powder, 3/4 teaspoon of the cinnamon, the baking soda, ginger, salt, and cloves. In a medium bowl, combine egg, yogurt, brown sugar, applesauce, oil, and molasses. Add egg mixture to flour mixture; stir just until combined. Fold in apple. Spread batter evenly in the prepared baking pan.

3. Bake about 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool slightly on a wire rack.

4. To serve, cut cake into squares. Serve warm. Top each serving with whipped topping and sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon.

*Sugar Substitutes: Choose from Sweet'N Low Brown or Sugar Twin Granulated Brown. Follow package directions to use product amount equivalent to 1/3 cup brown sugar.

Caramel Apple Bread Pudding Recipe

Ingredients

1 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 cup fat-free milk
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup egg substitute
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
5 cups cubed day-old bread
1/2 cup chopped peeled apple
1/2 cup fat-free whipped topping
1/2 cup fat-free caramel ice cream topping

Directions

In a large bowl, combine the applesauce, milk, brown sugar, egg substitute, vanilla and cinnamon. Fold in bread cubes and apple; let stand for 15 minutes or until bread is softened.
Pour into an 8-in. square baking dish coated with cooking spray. Bake, uncovered, at 325° for 35-40 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Serve warm with whipped topping and caramel topping. Refrigerate leftovers. Yield: 8 servings.

Homemade Heating Pad

Here's a old time favorite that make a great Christmas gift for anyone. A homemade heating pad.

Tools and Materials

Sewing machine
Iron
Fabric (about 1/2 yard will make at least one)
Machine-sewing thread in coordinating color
Bone folder
Scissors
Dried rice or buckwheat
Lavender oil (optional)

Heating Pad How-To

1. Fold a 20-by-14-inch piece of fabric in half lengthwise, right sides facing.

2. Sew one short side and one long side with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

3. Fold the open end out 1/4 inch and press it.

4. Clip the corners, being careful not to cut into the seams. Turn the fabric right side out.

5. Use a bone folder to push out the corners and make them sharp.

6. Fill the bag a little less than halfway with dried cherry pits or buckwheat. If desired, the pits or buckwheat can be mixed with a few drops of lavender oil before filling.

7. Close the open end of the bag with a top stitch.

1. Saw bamboo canes to varying lengths with level bottoms and 2 inches above each shelf for safety.
2. Melt wax in a double boiler; pour in enough to coat shelf surface.
3. Insert a large wick with a metal tab; let wax harden.
4. Fill almost to the top with wax.
5. Let cool for 4 hours before using, and trim wick to 1/4 inch

Use sponge brush and Cloud White to paint rim and inside pot.

Use sea sponge to pounce Hydrangea Blue on bottom section lightening pressure towards top.

Use sea sponge and Blue Bahama to lightly blend into Hydrangea Blue section.

Use sea sponge and Sweet Pea to blend into Blue Bahama section continuing up to rim.

Trace and transfer lettering.

Use liner brush and Hydrangea Blue to paint lettering.

Fill gift pot with eye mask, bath mitt, bath salts, lotion, candle, or whatever favorite pampering products gift recipient will enjoy.

Wrap pot in cellophane gift bag. Tie with ribbon.

Christmas Cheese Spread

1 lb. sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 c. mayonnaise
1/4 c. heavy cream
1 c. chopped pecans
1 tbsp. garlic
2 dashes Tabasco sauce
1 tsp. cayenne pepper

Shred cheese. Mix all ingredients, shape in mold, refrigerate. Remove from mold prior to serving. Serve with crackers.

Carrot-Cake Cookies

For the filling:

2 ounces bar cream cheese, room temperature
2 ounces unsalted butter, room temperature
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

For the cookies:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
1/2 cup packed light-brown sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg yolk
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup packed, finely grated, peeled carrots
1/3 cup dried currants

Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Make filling: With an electric mixer, beat cream cheese and butter until smooth. Add sugar and lemon juice; beat until combined. Cover; chill until firm, at least 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, make cookies: In a large bowl, whisk together butter, sugars, and egg yolk. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, ginger, and salt. Add flour mixture to butter mixture; stir until combined. Mix in oats, carrots, and currants.

Drop dough by level tablespoons, 2 inches apart, onto prepared baking sheets. Flatten with the palm of your hand. Bake until edges are crisp, rotating baking sheets halfway through, 15 to 18 minutes. Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool.

Turn half the cookies over, bottom side up; dollop each with about 1 teaspoon chilled cream-cheese filling. Top with remaining cookies, pressing gently to spread filling to edges. Serve immediately.

My friend Carolyn sent me this to make for a Christmas gift for my niece.You can use any color combination you like.

You'll need:

2 small lampwork beads
4 flower crystal beads
2 aventurine heart beads
2 heart charms
2 ear hooks
2 - 2 inch eye pins
Round nosed pliers
Flat/bent nosed pliers

1. Start by using your round nosed pliers to open the loop on an eye pin, slip a heart charm onto the loop, and use flat nosed pliers to close the loop up.

2. Slip on 1 flower crystal, 1 lampwork bead, 1 flower crystal, and 1 aventurine heart.

3. Use round nosed pliers to create a loop on the end of the eye pin.

4. Attach an ear hook to the loop, and use flat nosed pliers to close the loop around the hear hook.

5. Repeat the steps above to make a second earring.

Basic Supplies

Directions

1 Remove any labels from bottles. Wash in warm, soapy water; rinse well and let dry.

2 Paint bottle caps Neopaque Black; let dry.

3 Die cut two flowers for each bottle from metal sheets. Place flowers flat on protected work surface. Place several drops of ink onto each flower and use a small paintbrush to move ink over surface. Let dry. Dry brush edges of each flower with black ink.

4 Glue flower layers together with Liquid Fusion. Glue 10mm stone to center of each flower; glue flowers to caps. Apply a double row of topaz gems around edges of each cap.

5 In word processing program, choose favorite font and size to 20pt. Type words such as "Relax," "Recharge," and "Cheer up" into document. Insert printable silk sheet into printer according to manufacturer's instructions; print text. Peel off backing and cut words into 1-1/2"x4" strips. If desired, fray edges. Adhere organza labels to bottles with clear dots placed at each side.

6 Cut 8" ribbon length and tie around neck of bottle. Fill bottles with bath salts of choice using funnel. Replace caps.

Chocolate Nut Chews

1 & 1/2 c Sugar

1/4 c Cocoa

1/2 c evaporated milk

1/3 c Butter

1/3 c Peanut butter

1 ts Vanilla

1 & 1/2 c Quick rolled oats

1/2 c Salted peanuts

Mix in a heavy 2 quart saucepan, sugar, cocoa, milk and butter. Stir over medium heat until mixture bubbles all over top. Boil and stir 2 minutes more. Remove from heat. Stir in until melted the peanut butter; add the vanilla, uncooked quick rolled oats and nuts. With 2 teaspoons, drop on waxed paper. Let stand until set. Makes 36 chews.

Red yarn - 44 yds.
(2) Black Buttons (size 28mm)
Boa w/heavy Marabou Trim

Stitches Used:

Slanting Gobelin

Instructions:

**I used a "giant roll of Charmin Ultra" toilet paper...you might need to cut the canvas smaller in width if you are going to use a smaller or regular roll of toilet paper.**

Cut 1 piece of 111X32 threads (110X31 holes). Following the picture of the finished project above, stitch the project in the slanting gobelin stitch using Red Needloft yarn. Overcast the top and bottom also with the Red Needloft yarn and also whip stitch the ends together making a cylinder. Using black DMC thread, place 1 black button 3 gobelin stitches from the bottom and the other button 7 gobelin stitches from the top (which should about 3 stitches inbetween the buttons)...you'll place these buttons in the middle of the cylinder (seam in the back). To attach the boa at the top of the cylinder, I used white DMC thread, starting at the seam I went through the top hole wrapped around the boa. Then I ran the thread under the back stitches of the red, after about 15 holes, I repeated the wrapping, so I had about 6 wraps and started & ended at the seam. Fluffed up the boa and you can't even see the white thread.

Cut canvas using chart. Using Continental stitch follow chart either using colors shown or colors of your choice.

Use 4 strands floss and back stitch mouth.

Strawberry Divinity

3 c. sugar
3/4 c. light corn syrup
3/4 c. water
2 egg whites, stiffly beaten
1 (3 oz.) pkg. strawberry jello
1 c. chopped nuts (optional)
1/2 c. flaked coconut (optional)

Combine sugar, syrup and water. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Then cook without stirring to 260 degrees on candy thermometer. Combine beaten egg whites and jello. Beat until mixture forms peaks. Pour hot syrup in a thin stream into egg whites, beating constantly. Beat until candy loses its gloss and holds its shape. Fold in nuts and coconut. Drop by spoonful onto wax paper.

Welcome back to my Christmas blog for Christmas in July. To start things off I have a quick recipe to serve with crackers while friends and family are waiting for dinner. Enjoy!

Christmas Cheese Spread

1 lb. sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 c. mayonnaise
1/4 c. heavy cream
1 c. chopped pecans
1 tbsp. garlic
2 dashes Tabasco sauce
1 tsp. cayenne pepper

Shred cheese. Mix all ingredients, shape in mold, refrigerate. Remove from mold prior to serving. Serve with crackers.

Porcelain Bead Ornaments

Make elegant ornaments in one evening with just a little time, paint, and imagination. Porcelain ornaments are great to give to friends and family or to decorate your own Christmas tree.

Finished size: 1" x 3 1/2" Ornaments

You will need (for each):

• One 1" x 3 1/2" diam. porcelain disc ornament*
• Acrylic paint*: Winter Blue (DA190)
Cool White (DA240)
Soft Lilac (DA237)
• Varnish*
• Assorted self-stick rhinestones: white, clear, blue
• Ornament hanger
• Round craft brush
• Pouncer
• Paper plate for palette
• Tacky glue*
*The following products were used for this project: Viking Woodcrafts porcelain disc ornament #168-0028 • Aleene's Original tacky glue • DecoArt acrylic paints, Star Lite varnish (DS32)

Note: See end of article for product information.

• You can also use non-stick rhinestones or shapes and adhere using a toothpick and glue.
• Allow glue to dry between steps.
• See photo for details and placement.

STEP 1: Paint ornament. Remove top cap from ornaments and set aside. Pour three paint colors onto paper plate. Use pouncer to dip into all three paints. Pounce paint onto one side of ornament. Use white paint to blend and lighten colors, especially in center of ornament. Repeat on opposite side. Apply glue to top of ornament. Place cap on and let dry about an hour. Use craft brush to apply varnish to ornament. Insert ornament hanger into cap and hang ornament to dry.

STEP 2: Apply rhinestones. Attach a round rhinestone to center of ornament. Attach four assorted self-stick rhinestones in a line above center rhinestone. Attach rhinestones in same pattern in a line below middle rhinestone. Attach rhinestones in same pattern to left and right of middle rhinestone. Attach three or four rhinestones in a different pattern in a line diagonally between two horizontal and vertical rows. Repeat this pattern for three more diagonal rows.

STEP 3: Finish. For more pizzazz, add smaller shapes and beads around larger rhinestones as shown. You don’t need to make all ornaments the same. Remember, every snowflake is different!

Materials:

- Assorted buttons

- Cardboard

- Metallic gold spray paint
- Multi purpose cement glue

Instructions:

1. Cut approximately 3 1/2" inch diameter circle from cardboard.

2. Spray paint the front and back of cardboard circle gold.

3. Use cement glue to arrange buttons on the cardboard making sure to cover cardboard edges. Arrange larger plain button on the bottom and place unique, colored buttons on top.

4. Once glue has dried, display on a small plate stand or attach ribbon and use as an ornament or decoration.

TIP: Have lots of different colored buttons? Use metallic gold spray paint to spray paint them for this project.

No one belongs on the Christmas tree more than Santa does! These tiny red Santa boots are adorable amidst Christmas greenery.

Materials:

Scissors
Fabric Glue
6" of 3/8" Wide Grosgrain Ribbon
19 x 12 Red Soft Felt Sheet
19 x 12 White Stick-It Felt Sheet

Stick-It Felt Stickers

Steps:

Using the Stocking Template, cut out the following shapes: White Stick-It Felt Sheet, 2 Tops to the Stocking, Red Soft Felt Sheet, 2 Stocking Pieces

Apply a thin line of glue to all sides (except the top) of one of your stocking pieces.

Place remaining stocking piece on top of glued piece. Push your finger lightly along the glue line to make sure it is a secure fit.

Fold 6" piece of ribbon in half.

Glue to the back corner of your stocking

Remove adhesive backing from one stocking top piece and place over back of stocking.

Repeat step 6 for the front.

Optional Steps:

Holiday Eggnog

2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
2 quarts milk
2 tbsps. vanilla extract
2 cups heavy whipping cream
1 tsp. ground nutmeg

In heavy 4-quart saucepan, with wire whisk, beat eggs, sugar, and salt until blended. Gradually stir in 1 quart milk and cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon well, about 25 minutes (mixture should be about 170º F to 175º F. but do not boil or it will curdle).

Pour custard into large bowl; stir in vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg, and remaining milk. Cover and refrigerate until well chilled, about 3 hours.

To serve, in small bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat heavy or whipping cream until soft peaks form. With wire whisk, gently fold whipped cream into custard mixture.

Pour eggnog into chilled 5-quart punch bowl; sprinkle with ground nutmeg.

Makes about 16 cups or thirty-two 1/2-cup servings.

Fun ideas with cookie cuters

Make cookie cutter frames to give to grandparents for their Christmas tree. Take a cookie cutter and your child's picture. Trim the picture to the size and shape of the cookie cutter and glue in place. You can put another picture on the other side, or use a piece of Christmas fabric, felt, pretty paper, a small cross stitch design, or a message. Trim the sides of the cutter with a pretty ribbon or some glitter, hot glue a ribbon to the top for hanging, along with a sprig of holly!

Make cookie cutter fudge holders. Place large outline-shaped cookie cutters over a large sheet of cellophane or clear plastic wrap, pour fudge (any recipe) inside, let harden, and tie a bow around the cellophane at the top.

INGREDIENTS

1 (18.25 ounce) package white cake mix
3 egg whites
1/4 cup cranberry applesauce
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
1/4 cup white sugar
1 1/4 cups water
1 (16 ounce) can whole cranberry sauce

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and lightly flour the bottom and sides of two 9 inch round cake pans.

In a large mixing bowl combine the cake mix, egg whites, water and cranberry apple sauce. Mix on low speed until batter is moist. Then mix on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour batter into the prepared pans.

Bake cake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 to 35 minutes. Cake is done when a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool cakes on wire racks in pans for 10 minutes. Remove cakes from pans and let finish cooling on racks.

To Make Frosting: In a medium sized bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, sugar and 1/2 of the whipped topping until smooth. Fold in the cranberry sauce and the remaining whipped topping. Refrigerate frosting until chilled. When cakes have cooled, frost the center and top of cake only. The frosting will be very soft.

Apple-Stuffed Squash

1 medium acorn squash, halved and seeded
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 medium tart apple, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon raisins
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
2 tablespoons brown sugar

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions

Sprinkle squash with salt. In a skillet, saute apple slices and raisins in butter until apples are tender. Add sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Spoon into squash halves; place in a baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 350 degrees F for 45-55 minutes or until squash is tender.

Candy Cane Signpost

Here's a real treat for your tree: a candy cane-like ornament that points the way to Santa's place.

Materials

Large craft stick (ours was 4 ½ inches long)
Acrylic paint: white, green and red
Craft knife
Permanent marker
Glue
Small green felt holly leaves
Red mini pom-pom berries
White glitter
5-inch piece of ribbon

Instructions

Coat a large craft stick (ours was 4 ½ inches long) with white acrylic paint and another with green paint. Let them dry, then add stripes of red paint to the white stick.

Use a craft knife to cut a 3-inch section from the green stick, notching each end to create an arrow shape, as shown. Write "North Pole" on the sign in permanent marker, then glue the sign to the red-and-white craft stick.

Next, glue on small green felt holly leaves and red mini pom-pom berries. If you like, add dabs of white paint, then sprinkle on white glitter for snow.

Finally, glue both ends of a 5-inch piece of ribbon to the back of the signpost for a hanger and let the glue dry.

Lollipop Ornament

Materials Needed:

Fabric
3/16” dowel
1 1/2” Styrofoam ball
1/8" wide ribbon
Thin string or embroidery floss
White craft glue
Pinking shears
Scissors
Saw
Ruler
Compass or round kitchen plate
Pencil
Needle

Preparation:

1) Using a compass or round kitchen plate, draw a 7 inch diameter circle onto the fabric. Cut circle out of fabric with pinking shears.

2) Cut a piece of ribbon 12 inches.

3) Cut a piece of embroidery floss 8 inches.

4) With a saw, cut a piece of wood dowel 5 inches long.

Assembly:

1) Stick one end of the wooden dowel into Styrofoam ball. See illustration A. Use a little glue on the end of the dowel if the dowel will not stay into the ball.

2) Spread some glue onto the ball. Center the fabric wrong side down onto the top of the ball, smooth fabric around ball and than gather fabric around dowel. Tie the ribbon around the fabric where the dowel and ball meet, than tie the ribbon into a bow. See illustration B. Allow glue to dry.

3) To create the hanger: Thread the floss onto the needle. Run the needle through the fabric on one side of the ball. Remove needle from floss. Bring the ends together and tie the ends together with a knot. See Illustration C.

Materials:

3" Styrofoam ball
Fuzzy yarn white yarn - sparkle yarn is pretty
Straight pin

Wrap yarn around ball until it is entirely covered, and make a knot at end. Form an 8" piece of yarn into a loop and make a knot with ends. Line up both knots and push a straight pin through them and into ball to hold end of yarn and loop in place.

White Cane Glimmer Sugar Scrub

Ingredients:

1 cup C&H Pure Cane Granulated Sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
Oil from 1 vitamin E capsule
1 or 2 drops of essential oil, lavender or orange
1 16oz glass container with lid

Instructions:

Combine all of the ingredients in a medium bowl until well blended. Using a spatula, transfer mix into the container and secure lid. Contents will settle, mix before using. Scoop a teaspoon or two of the scrub on your hands and gently massage onto wet skin in circular motions, concentrating on dry patches and rough areas of your skin. Avoid using on sensitive areas, in cuts or on skin that is irritated or sunburned. Leave on for 3 to 4 minutes before thoroughly rinsing with warm water. The scrub will tighten on your skin.

Sugar scrubs are not recommended for the face.

Quick Tip:
Use caution, as the oil in the sugar scrub can cause the tub to become slippery.

Christmas Bell Ornament

Christmas Bell Ornament

Materials needed:

A metal Bell (approx. 1 1/4” to 1 1/2” in diameter)
A 1” x 4” fabric scrap or ribbon
12” of 19 or 20 gauge wire
3 fake red berries on wire stems
4” piece of 1” wide green garland
Wire cutter and a needle nose pliers

Procedure:

1. Pull the wire half way through the top hole in the bell (the hole for the hanger).

2. Twist the two sides of the wire around each other, twisting up about 1 inch. Use a needle nose pliers to hold the wire in place while twisting.

3. Form a loop with each side of the wire and twist the remaining wire around the sides of the loop.

4. Center the green garland on the wire hanger and twist it on.

5. Twist on the red berries right above the green garland.

6. Tie on the rag ribbon. No need to make a bow, just tie a knot.

This is a fun & easy project for both kids and adults! Any size bell will work,just adjust the size and length of your garland and ribbon.

Snowy Balloon Ornaments

Snowy Balloon Ornaments

With little more than some balloons and glitter, you can fill your home with decorative snowballs.

Tools and Materials:

Balloon
Ball of cotton string
Craft glue
Clothespin
Dowel
Glitter
Pin
Tweezers
Metallic thread
Spray mount

Snowy Balloon Ornaments How-To:

1. Blow up the balloon until it's slightly smaller than your fist. Tie the end of the cotton string to the end of the balloon.

2. Thin the glue slightly with water and brush some on the bottom of the balloon to tack down the string. Begin wrapping the string vertically around the balloon. When 3/4 of the balloon is covered vertically, begin wrapping the string horizontally. To change direction, wrap the string around the tied-off end of the balloon. Continue until 3/4 of the balloon is wrapped horizontally.

3. Cut the string and secure it with a dab of glue. Brush the watered-down craft glue all over the string-covered balloon. Pinch the top of the balloon with a clothespin and thread the clothespin onto a dowel that you've suspended between two points. Allow to dry for several hours.

4. Once dry, pop the balloon with a pin and remove it, using tweezers, if necessary. Add a loop of metallic thread and brush the balloon with glue again. Working over a bowl, spoon on glitter and set aside to dry.

5. Spray the branch with spray mount and spoon on glitter. Allow to dry. Affix the ornament to the branch.

Use inexpensive aluminum cutters to turn out ornaments faster than you can bake a batch of cookies. Choose patterned papers or color-photocopy pictures onto card stock. Trace cutter on top; cut out. For a holiday greeting that stands out in a sea of red and green, make this striking blue card fronted by an antique scrap relief rendering of Old St. Nick.

Santa hasn't always been the red cherub we think of today. In times past he sported many different looks -- but always charming. This stunning card pairs a scrap relief print of an old-time Father Christmas with a card that looks like the sort of handmade journal that he might have used for his famous list.

Materials and Tools:

Blue card stock cut to 9 x 13 inches
Craft knife and straightedge
Scrap relief Santa (available at craft stores)
Clear plastic sheeting
Minibrads
Heat embossing kit
Cream-colored paper
Blue ink pad
Rubber stamp in script pattern
Blue fibers and gauze ribbon

Instructions:

1. Fold the blue card stock to make a 6-1/2-x-4-1/ 2-inch card.

2. Use the craft knife and straight edge to cut a window, centered, in the front of the card, that is slightly larger than the scrap relief Santa.

3. Cut the plastic sheeting so that it is 3/8 inch larger than the window on all sides. Attach the plastic to the card front using four minibrads.

4. Rub an embossing-ink pad over the Santa, sprinkle with clear embossing powder, and heat-emboss. Adhere the Santa to the outside of the window.

5. Cut the cream paper so that it is slightly smaller than the card when folded in half. Using blue ink, rubber-stamp a script pattern on the front of the paper.

6. Tuck the cream paper inside the card and secure it with ribbon and fibers around the fold of the cards.

Solid-Color Hat How-To:

1. You'll need one panel of fabric to make this hat. To determine the width of the fabric, measure the circumference of your head (including your ears)or use our size chart, adding a 1/4 inch on each side for seam allowance. The length for an adult hat should be about 13 inches, for a child's hat, about 10 inches. Cut out the panel of fabric.

2. With right sides facing in, sew the long ends, forming a tube. Trim seam allowance closely. If you wish to press open any remaining seam, use your fingers, do not use an iron because the fabric could melt.

3. To make a cuff, fold up bottom edge of fabric about 3 inches, then fold in another 1/4 inch for seam. Sew hem close to the turned edge.

4. Sew along the top of the hat, leaving a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Trim seam. Turn hat right-side out.

5. You can finish off the top of the hat with or without ears. For a hat with ears: Pinch corners into a fold, with the opening of each fold, facing front. Using matching thread, tightly tie off each folded corner about 1 1/2 inches down. Secure with 3 or 4 hand stitches through each ear. For a hat without ears: Join the two corners of the top of the hat together with a single stitch. Using strong thread, bring the needle through the inside of the hat at one corner and through the top of the other corner. Pull thread tight so the corners meet at the center. Tie off the thread inside hat.
Horizontal-Stripe Hat How-To:

Follow the instructions for the solid-color hat, but combine horizontal bands of different-colored fleece to equal the correct height of your hat. Use as many bands as you like in any width, allow a 1/4-inch seam allowance on the top and bottom of each band, and 3 inches to the bottom band for the hat's cuff.
Vertical-Stripe Hat How-To:

Follow the instructions for the solid-color hat, but in this case you'll need four fabric panels, two of each color. To determine the width of the panels, divide the head circumference by four, and add 1/4 inch on each side for seam allowance, then flatten the hat, right sides together, so that two panels lay directly on top of the other two panels. Match up the center seams.

Crown Hat How-To:

1. Follow steps 1 through 4 for the solid-color hat, but keep hat right sides facing in.

2. Lay the hat flat and measure the crown of your head (ear to ear as if for earmuffs) or use our chart. Place one end of a soft tape measure at the bottom left corner of the hat, extend tape measure to the right corner of the hat, the distance equal to your crown measurement (for example, extend tape measure 14 inches if that is the length of your crown measurement). Hold both points of the tape measure in place, and arch the excess in between. Center a pin3 inches above the highest point of the arc, this is now your low point.

3. Using tailor's chalk, draw a horizontal line across the low-point mark and then draw a line parallel to it 3 inches higher. Mark the center of this top line. Find the points midway between the left and right sides of the center point, but mark them on the low-point line, then mark the left and right side seams 1 inch below the top line. Connect the dots in a zigzag, crown pattern. Sew along the zigzag line.

4. Trim seam, turn right side out, and shape the three points. If you'd like, attach a small pom-pom to each point.

Pom-Pom How-To:

1. For a large pom-pomcut a strip of fleece 24 inches in length (or 9 to 12 inches for a smaller pom-pom) and as wide as you would like the pom-pom (4 inches is a good width for an adult hat). Fold the strip in half widthwise.

2. Lightly draw a line down the center of the fabric lengthwise. Cut fringes to the left and right of the lineleaving about 1/4 inch uncut in the center. The fringes can be as narrow or as wide as you like. Roll up strip of fabric.

3. Using upholstery threadbring the needle through the core of the pom-pomand wrap the thread tightly around the center a few times. Bring needle through the core againand tie a tight knot. Use the excess thread to sew the pom-pom to the topor the edgesof the hat.

Who's game for this challenging treat? Cut gingerbread while it's warm, after it cools, decorate with royal icing. Wrap pieces with a note: "Don't cheat: Solve the puzzle before you eat!"

Gingerbread

Ingredients:

* 3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
* 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, teaspoon baking soda
* 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
* 8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
* 1/2 cup packed dark-brown sugar
* 2 teaspoons ground ginger
* 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
* 3/4 teaspoon ground cloves
* 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
* 3/4 teaspoon coarse salt
* 1 large egg
* 3/4 cup unsulfured molasses

Directions:

1. Sift flour, baking soda, and baking powder into a medium bowl, set aside.

2. Mix butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until fluffy, about 2 minutes, mix in spices and salt. Mix in egg and molasses, occasionally scraping down sides of bowl. Add flour mixture, mix on low speed until combined. Divide dough in half, pat into two disks. Wrap in plastic wrap, refrigerate 1 hour.

3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick.

4. To make puzzles, cut rolled dough into six rectangles, each 6 by 9 inches (reroll scraps once). Transfer to a parchment-lined baking sheet, refrigerate until firm20 to 30 minutes. Bake until cookies are set and edges are just starting to brown10 to 12 minutes. While cookies are hot, use a pizza cutter or paring knife to cut out desired puzzle shapes. Carefully lift edges of parchment to keep puzzle pieces together, transfer to a wire rack. Let cool completely.

5. Fit a pastry bag with a 5/16-inch plain round tip (such as Ateco #3)fill with 1/2 cup untinted royal icing. Tie end with a rubber band, to prevent icing from drying out, stand bag, tip down, in a glass with a damp paper towel in the bottom. Tint remaining icing as desired, fill another pastry bag the same way.

6. Outline each puzzle piece with tinted icing, fill outlined area with more icing, smoothing with an offset spatula to make a thin layer. Let dry completely, about 1 hour. Keeping pieces together, use untinted icing to outline the shape of a tree (design should overlap all pieces)decorate area inside outline as desired. One at a time, lift each piece, sprinkle with sanding sugar, tapping off any excess. Let dry 1 hour, package in boxes, or store in an airtight container up to 1 week.

Royal Icing
Ingredients:

1 pound confectioners' sugar
5 tablespoons meringue powder or powdered egg whites
Directions:

Put sugar and meringue powder in a large mixing bowl. Add 1/2 cup water, and mix with an electric mixer on low speed, occasionally scraping down sides of bowl, until icing is thick and spreadable2 to 3 minutes. Check consistency by dipping a spoon in icing and letting it run back into bowl, a ribbon should form on the surface. Icing can be refrigerated in an airtight container up to 1 week, stir before using.

Chocolate Fudge in a Mug

1/4 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon finely chopped walnuts or pecans
Combine ingredients into a small zip-type plastic bag, then seal and shake to combine.

1/2 cup miniature marshmallows. Put marshmallows into a separate small zip-type plastic bag.

Line a 1 1/2 to 2 cup microwave-safe mug with tissue paper in a coordinating color. Place chocolate chip bag in bottom, then add the marshmallows bag to the top.

Attach a gift tag with the following instructions:

Combine Fudge Mix and 2 1/2 tablespoons butter or margarine and microwave for 3 minutes. Remove, and quickly stir in marshmallows until melted. let cool for 5-7 minutes and then place in refrigerator for 8-10 minutes to set.

Christmas Garland from Cranberries, Popcorn, and Cookies

Make a charming, old-fashioned looking Christmas garland by stringing cranberries, popcorn, and glitter-covered cookies together.

What You Need:

Royal icing
Food coloring
Star-shape purchased cookies
Edible glitter
Fresh cranberries
Popcorn
28-gauge silver wire
1/2-inch-wide satin ribbon, cut into 12-inch lengths

How to Make It:

Tint icing in desired colors with food coloring. Frost cookies. While frosting is wet, sprinkle with glitter. Let dry.

Alternately string cranberries and popcorn onto wire. Allow a little slack at each end for hanging loops.

Use a piece of wire to poke a hole in the top of each cookie; string a length of ribbon through each hole. At desired intervals, slide the cranberry and popcorn apart slightly and tie a cookie in between.

3 fluid ounces rum
2 fluid ounces peppermint schnapps
1/2 fluid ounce grenadine syrup
1 small candy cane

Directions

Pour the rum, schnapps, and grenadine into a cocktail shaker over ice. Cover, and shake until the outside of the shaker has frosted. Strain into a chilled martini glass, and garnish with the candy cane to serve.

Chocolate Fudge Pound Cake

This rich fudge cake makes a great finish to any meal. Add some vanilla ice cream to tame the richness.
Ingredients

Cake:

3 cups flour
2 3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup cocoa
1/4 tsp baking powder
1/8 tsp salt
5 large eggs at room temperature
1 cup milk
2 sticks butter
1/2 cup canola oil
2 tsp vanilla

Fudge Icing:

1 stick butter
4 tbsp milk
3 heaping tbsp cocoa
1 tsp vanilla
1 pound powdered sugar
Method

Cake: Mix softened butter, vegetable oil and sugar on medium speed with mixer. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each, then add vanilla. Combine flour, salt, cocoa and baking powder in a small bowl. Add to butter mixture, one cup at a time, alternating with partial cup of milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat very well between milk and flour additions. Beat well on medium high before pouring into prepared tube or bundt pan. Bake at 325 degrees about 1 hour and 15 minutes or until done. Test for doneness in center of cake. Icing: Place butter, milk and cocoa over low heat and bring to slow boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat right away and add vanilla. Slowly stir in powdered sugar to get to a thick, glossy consistency. Cool cake before serving.

Notes: When making the icing, you may need more sugar than the one pound it calls for. I frequently do. Keep adding until the icing seems almost too thick to spread on the cake. If you don't thicken it quite a bit, it will drip off the cake. If you get the icing too stiff or it gets too hard before you can get the whole cake iced, add a little milk in and make it spreadable again.

Apple Walnut Coffee Cake

An extra-moist coffee cake thanks to a cup of sour cream in the batter--and a topping of walnuts, cinnamon and brown sugar adds a nice crunch.
Ingredients

1 cup chopped walnuts
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/3 cup cold butter

Filling:

3 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and sliced
2 teaspoon lemon juice
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Method

Combine nuts, brown sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and set aside. Place flour in a small bowl then cut in cold butter into coarse crumbs. Stir in 3/4 cup nut mixture and set aside for filling. Toss apples with lemon juice and set aside. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream. Spread 2/3 of batter into a greased 9 inch springform pan. Top with reserved nut mixture, apples and remaining batter. Sprinkle with nuts and reserved topping mix. Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes. Carefully run a knife around edge of pan. Cool for 1 hour before serving.

Hot Fudge Pudding Cake

Cake

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened baking cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla

Pudding Mixture

1 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened baking cocoa
Dash salt
1 1/3 cups boiling water

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oven to 350°F. In medium bowl, mix flour, 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa, the baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Stir in milk, butter and vanilla until well blended. Spread batter in ungreased 8-inch square or 9-inch round cake pan.

2. In small bowl, mix 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa and dash salt. Sprinkle evenly over batter. Pour boiling water over sugar mixture.

3. Bake 40 to 50 minutes or until center is set and firm to the touch. Serve warm. If desired, serve with ice cream. Store in refrigerator.

Birdhouse Wind Chime

This is a cute little birdhouse wind chime I made from a craft kit. After I painted it, I used the rub on decorations. They were so easy to do. Last thing was to glue the chime on the bottom. I let it dry over night.

Blue & Green Swirled Jewelry Set

Here is my newest project. My best friends daughters 15th birthday is this month. I made her a pair of earrings and a matching stretchy bracelet. I found these cool swirled beads at Michaels in her favorite colors. Bought a strand of matching crystal beads. There were three different coordinating colors on the strand. The pictures are below.

The necklace was an after thought.

Apple Crisp for Two

2 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples
1/2 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup oats
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
3 tablespoons soft butter

Place apples in a buttered 9x5x3-inch loaf pan. Combine brown sugar
flour, oats, cinnamon, nutmeg, and butter. Mix until crumbly; sprinkle over apples. Bake at 350° for about 30 minutes, or until apples are tender and topping is nicely browned. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped topping.

Serves 2.

Holiday Rum Cake
Cake

Ingredients:
1 (18.25 Oz.) package of yellow cake mix
1 cup light, coconut flavored rum
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 (3.4 Oz.) package of vanilla instant pudding
4 eggs
Baker’s Joy® non-stick baking spray with flour

Rum Glaze

1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup water
1 stick butter
1/4 cup light, coconut flavored rum

Cake

Instructions:
Position rack in center of oven and preheat to 325°F. Spray a 12-cup Bundt® pan with Baker’s Joy® spray. Using an electric mixer beat all ingredients in a large bowl for 2 minutes. Transfer batter to prepared pan. Bake 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted into center comes out clean. Cool in pan for 20 minutes. Invert cake onto platter and carefully remove from pan. Allow cake to cool completely.

Rum Glaze

Stir sugar and water in a heavy medium saucepan over medium high heat until sugar dissolves. Add butter. Simmer until mixture thickens and is syrupy, stirring every 5 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in rum. Cool glaze completely. Drizzle glaze evenly over cooled cake and serve.

Makes 12 Servings.

Apple-Berry Pie

1 pastry for a 9 inch double crust pie
1 cup white sugar
4 teaspoons tapioca
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups fresh blackberries
2 cups apples - peeled, cored and sliced
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). On a lightly floured surface, roll out one crust, and place in a 9 inch pie plate. Roll out top crust, and set aside.

In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, tapioca, and cinnamon. Add blackberries and apple slices. Toss gently to coat without mashing the berries. Let stand for 20 minutes.

Spoon filling into pastry lined pan. Dot with butter. Moisten the edge of the pastry with water. Cover with top crust; trim and crimp edge. Cut a few slits in the top to allow steam to escape during baking. Cover edge with foil to prevent over-browning.

Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes. Remove foil, and continue baking for 20 to 25 minutes, or until crust is golden brown. Cool on wire rack.

It pouring here on California's central coast. The wind is blowing. I guess you would call it a raining and blustering day. Huge puddles outside the apartment. Starting to flood a little downstairs. Tried to get a picture of the Redwood trees blowing outside the window but the flash on the camera is being finicky and won't turn off. Here are some pictures for those who forgot what it is like without snow. LOL

So, since it is raining so hard I think I will do some crafting.

Quick Cranberry Bark

Melt 1 bag of white chocolate chips in the microwave. Stir in 1 C. dried cranberries and 1/2 chopped nuts (whatever you prefer) and 1/2 tsp. nutmeg. Stir & blend well. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Spread
the candy mixture on the paper and let harden. Break into pieces and store in air tight containers.

Gumdrop Fudge Recipe

Ingredients

1-1/2 pounds white candy coating, coarsely chopped
1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
1/8 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1-1/2 cups chopped gumdrops

Directions

Line a 9-in. square pan with foil; set aside. In a large saucepan, heat the candy coating, milk and salt over low heat until coating is melted. Remove from the heat; stir in vanilla and gumdrops.
Spread into prepared pan. Cover and refrigerate until firm. Using foil, remove fudge from the pan; cut into 1-in. squares. Store at room temperature.

Yield: about 3 pounds.

Chocolate-Coated Pretzels Recipe

Ingredients

1 to 1-1/4 pounds white and/or milk chocolate candy coating, coarsely chopped
1 package (8 ounces) miniature pretzels
Nonpariels, colored jimmies and colored sugar, optional

Directions

In a microwave, melt half of candy coating at a time. Dip pretzels in candy coating; allow excess to drip off. Place on waxed paper; let stand until almost set. Garnish as desired; let stand until set.

Yield: 5-6 dozen.

Honey and Macadamia Nut Fudge

Ingredients

1-1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup half-and-half or light cream
1/3 cup milk
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup coarsely chopped macadamia nuts, hazelnuts (filberts), or pecans
Chopped nuts or chopped dried pineapple or papaya (optional)

Directions

1. Line a 9x5x3-inch loaf pan with foil, extending foil over edges of the pan. Butter the foil; set pan aside.

2. Butter the sides of a heavy 2-quart saucepan. In the saucepan, combine granulated sugar, brown sugar, half-and-half or light cream, milk, and honey. Cook and stir over medium-high heat until mixture boils and sugars dissolve (about 8 minutes). Clip a candy thermometer to side of pan. Reduce heat to medium-low; continue to boil at a moderate steady rate, stirring frequently, until thermometer registers 234 degrees F, soft-ball stage (15 to 20 minutes). Adjust heat as necessary to maintain a steady boil.

3. Remove pan from heat. Add butter and vanilla, but do not stir. Cool, without stirring, to 110 degrees F (50 to 60 minutes).

4. Remove thermometer from pan. Beat mixture vigorously with a clean wooden spoon until fudge just begins to thicken; stir in the 1/2 cup nuts. Continue beating until fudge just starts to lose its gloss (about 10 minutes total).

5. Immediately spread fudge evenly in prepared pan. Score into 1-1/4-inch squares while warm, and if desired, sprinkle with additional nuts or dried fruit. When fudge is firm, use foil to lift it out of the pan. Cut fudge into squares. Makes 1-1/4 pounds (about 36 pieces).

To store: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Orange Necklace and Earrings

Colorful Cookie Buttons

These tasty morsels are the perfect lunch-box treats!

Ingredients

1-1/2 cups (3 sticks) butter, softened
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
2 large egg yolks
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup "M&M's"® Chocolate Mini Baking Bits

Preheat oven to 350°F. In large bowl cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy; beat in egg yolks and vanilla. In medium bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt; add to creamed mixture. Shape dough into 72 balls. For each cookie, place one ball on ungreased cookie sheet and flatten. Place 8 to 10 "M&M's"® Chocolate Mini Baking Bits on dough. Flatten second ball and place over "M&M's"® Chocolate Mini Baking Bits, pressing top and bottom dough together. Decorate top with remaining "M&M's"® Chocolate Mini Baking Bits. Repeat with remaining dough balls and “M&M’s”® Chocolate Mini Baking Bits, placing cookies about 2 inches apart on cookie sheets. Bake 17 to 18 minutes. Cool 2 minutes on cookie sheets; cool completely on wire racks. Store in tightly covered container.
Makes 3 dozen cookies

Golden Butterscotch Icebox Cookies

Ingredients

1 cup butter, softened
2 cups packed dark brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 eggs
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup finely chopped pecans

Directions

1. In a large bowl, beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the brown sugar, salt, and baking soda. Beat until combined, scraping bowl occasionally. Beat in eggs and vanilla until combined. Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer. Using a wooden spoon, stir in any remaining flour and the pecans.

2. Divide dough in half. Shape each portion of dough into an 8-inch-long roll. Wrap rolls in plastic wrap or waxed paper and chill about 2 hours or until dough is firm enough to slice.

3. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Cut rolls into 1/4-inch-thick slices. Place slices 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes or until edges are firm. Cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute. Transfer cookies to a wire rack; let cool. Makes about 60 cookies.

To Store: Layer cookies between sheets of waxed paper in an airtight container; cover. Store at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Cranberry-White Chocolate Cookies

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 1/3 cups sugar
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups white chocolate morsels
1 (6-ounce) package sweetened dried cranberries

Preparation

Combine flour and next 3 ingredients; set aside.

Beat butter at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy; gradually add sugar, beating well. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating until blended after each addition.

Add flour mixture to butter mixture gradually, beating at low speed until blended. Stir in white chocolate morsels and cranberries.

Drop cookie dough by heaping tablespoonfuls onto lightly greased baking sheets.

Bake at 350° for 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned on bottom. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Yield: Makes about 3 dozen

Gingerbread Drop Cookies

Ingredients

1 cup shortening
1-1/2 cups packed brown sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1-1/2 teaspoons ground ginger
1-1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/3 cup molasses
2 eggs
1 tablespoon milk
3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts

Directions

In a large mixing bowl beat shortening with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add brown sugar, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves. Beat until well combined. Beat in molasses, eggs, and milk until combined. Beat in as much flour as you can with the mixer. Stir in any remaining flour with a wooden spoon. Stir in raisins and nuts.

Drop dough by rounded teaspoons onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375 degree F oven about 8 minutes or until bottoms are lightly browned. Cool on wire racks. Makes about 90.

Make-Ahead Tip: Up to 1 month ahead, make and bake cookies. Cool, place in a freezer container, and freeze. To serve, thaw at room temperature for 1 hour.

Bag of Beads

A couple days ago I decided to order a Bag of Beads (which is a one pound bag of misc. beads and findings) from Fire Mountain Gems http://www.firemountaingems.com/ . Well the bag arived today. I am ticked to death. This bag has all kinds of neat things. Hear are 2 pictures of the bag and a little view of it's contents. I will later add pictures of the contents in a large cookie sheet so you get a better idea of what is in the bag. Now all I have to do is figure out wht to make. Sorry about the glare.

Recipe Sunday 2 - Gifts in a Jar

Butterscotch Pecan Cookie Mix in a Jar

Ingredients:

1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup firmly packed Golden Brown Sugar
1 cup butterscotch chips
3/4 cup chopped pecans

Instructions:

Combine flour, baking soda and salt in a small bowl. Spoon into 1 quart, widemouthed canning jar. Layer remaining ingredients in order given, making sure to pack down each layer firmly. Clean inside of jar with a dry paper towel after each layer.

Decorate lid by cutting fabric into a 7-inch wide square or circle. Secure with a rubber band and tie with a decorative ribbon and accents.

Attach these instructions to the jar:

In a large mixing bowl, cream together 2/3 cup softened butter or margarine, 1 egg and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla until combined. Slowly add contents of jar and mix well. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375°F for 9-11 minutes or until lightly browned.

Serving Size: 3 dozen cookies.

Milky Way Balls in a Jar

Place in jar:

18 marshmallows (large)
3 large Milky Way candy bars
2 1/2 cups Cocoa Crispies /Pops cereal

Attach gift card:

Add 1/2 stick butter
Instructions:

Melt butter; add marshmallows and Milky Ways. Melt
Over low heat; stir in crispies. Wet hands; roll in
Balls. Roll in powdered sugar. Separate until cool.
Store in airtight container.

Drop Cookies Mix in a Jar

1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/3 cup brown sugar (packed)
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup crispy rice cereal
1/2 cup mixed colors M&M's candies

Layer all ingredients in a 1-quart fruit jar. Decorate the jar as desired.

Attach the following instructions to the jar:

Drop Cookies:

Empty ingredients of jar into a large bowl. Combine dry ingredients with 1 egg and 1/4 cup melted butter; mix completely. Drop by teaspoon on a cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees F for 8 to 10 minutes.

Yields 2 1/2 dozen cookies.

Dollar Tree Valentine Wreath

I woke up about 12:30 am this morning and couldn't get back to sleep. I don't know if was because mu daughter Tiffany was going to be leaving at 4:30 am for Fort Polk, LO or if it was because my hubby was snoring so loud. Anyway, while I was laying there I started thinking about how to make a simple and inexpensive wreath for my front door. This is what I came up with.

My Dollar Tree Valentine Wreath

I got hubby to take me to the Dollar Tree. That is a chore in itself. I usually take the bus, but it was raining this morning. $6.00 later I came home with my supplies. I ended up using only $4:00 of my materials. Oh well, I will find a use for the rest of it I'm sure.

Anyway, here is what I bought.

Supplies:

Pink net bath sponge

White net bath sponge

White ribbon (I bought one 5 yard spool, needed 2)

Styrofoam wreath form

Pink flowers

Red Valentine garland

I ended up using only one of each color of the bath sponges.

I didn't like the way the red garland looked so I didn't use it.

I wrapped the form in ribbon (needed more)

Then I took apart the net bath sponge.

I cut the sponge into 8 inch strips.

Then cut the strips lenghth wise, open up netting.

I started tying and knotting the strips around the form.

Alternating each color.

After that was completed I separated the flower.

Poking hole. into the wreath form, I inserted the flowers.

I added a ribbon to the top for a hanger.

Done here is my Valentine door wreath.

Easy Blackberry Cobbler

Prep: 10 min., Bake: 35 min., Stand: 10 min.
Yield: Makes 6 servings
Ingredients:

4 cups fresh blackberries
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 large egg
1 cup sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
6 tablespoons butter, melted
Whipped cream (optional)
Garnish: fresh mint sprig

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 375°. Place blackberries in a lightly greased 8-inch square baking dish; sprinkle with lemon juice. Stir together egg, sugar, and flour in a medium bowl until mixture resembles coarse meal. Sprinkle over fruit. Drizzle melted butter over topping. Bake at 375° for 35 minutes or until lightly browned and bubbly. Let stand 10 minutes. Serve warm with whipped cream, if desired. Garnish with fresh mint sprig, if desired.

For a neat presentation, bake for the same amount of time in 6 (8-oz.) ramekins on an aluminum foil-lined baking sheet.

Peach Cobbler with a Cinnamon Crust
Ingredients:

1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
6 cups sliced peeled fresh ripe peaches or 2 (16-ounce) packages frozen sliced peaches
Cooking spray
2 tablespoons sugar
1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated pie dough (such as Pillsbury)
1 large egg white, lightly beaten

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350°
Lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Combine the flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Place the peaches in an 11 x 7-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle with sugar mixture; let stand 30 minutes.

Combine 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and 2 tablespoons sugar in a small bowl. Unfold 1 pie dough, reserving remaining dough for another use. Brush with egg white; sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar mixture. Cut the dough into 16 wedges. Place the dough wedges, coated sides up, on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until golden brown; set aside.

Bake peaches at 350° for 30 minutes or until bubbly. Arrange crust over peaches. Serve warm.
Yield: 10 servings.

Caramel-Pecan-Apple Pie

Ingredients:

Crust:
1 box (15 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box

Filling:
6 cups thinly sliced, peeled apples (6 medium)
3/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon lemon juice

Topping:
1/3 cup caramel topping
2 to 4 tablespoons chopped pecans

Directions:

1. Heat oven to 425°F. Make pie crusts as directed on box for Two-Crust Pie using 9-inch glass pie plate.

2. In large bowl, gently mix filling ingredients; spoon into crust-lined pie plate. Top with second crust; seal edges and flute. Cut slits or shapes in several places in top crust. Cover edge with 2- to 3-inch-wide strips of foil to prevent excessive browning; remove foil during last 15 minutes of baking.

3. Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown. Immediately after removing pie from oven, drizzle with caramel topping; sprinkle with pecans. Cool on cooling rack at least 2 hours before serving.

High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): No change.

Craft - picture frames

I had these 3 small black frames that I got a while back for a $1.00. When I got them home I realized they were smaller than I thought. So they have been sitting around collecting dust for over a year. This weekend I pulled them out and decided to sponge paint them in my kitchen colors.
First I used white then after that dried I went over them in red. Now what to put in the frames. I saw a cute idea in a magazine that used words printed on card stock. I went to my computer and typed up these cards with the words food, family and friends. There you go new pictures for my kitchen.

Apple-Raspberry Crisp

1 cup packed brown sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
5 large Granny Smith apples - peeled, cored and thinly sliced
1 cup frozen raspberries, thawed
1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x9 inch square baking dish.

In a large bowl, mix brown sugar and 1 tablespoon flour. Add sliced apples and raspberries; toss to coat. Spoon into baking dish. In a medium bowl, mix together oats, 1/2 cup flour, cinnamon and salt. Stir in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over apple mixture.

Bake in preheated oven for 50 to 55 minutes, or until topping is lightly browned. Serve warm.

Apple Cinnamon Muffins

1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1 egg
1/3 cup orange juice
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 cups chopped peeled tart apples

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and cinnamon. Set aside. Beat the egg. Add the orange juice and the butter. Stir into the dry ingredients just until moistened. The Batter Will Be Thick. Fold in the apples. Fill the greased or paper-lined muffin cups two-thirds full. Bake at 350 F for 20-25 minutes or until the muffins test done.

Holiday Cobbler With Pear And Cranberries

1/2 c. Karo light corn syrup
1/3 c. sugar
1 tbsp. cornstarch
1 1/2 c. fresh OR frozen cranberries
2 med. pears, peeled & sliced
3/4 c. all-purpose flour
1/2 c. sugar
1/3 c. (5 1/3 tbsp.) margarine OR butter
1 c. Quaker Oats (Quick or Old Fashioned), uncooked
1 egg, slightly beaten

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Grease 9 inch square or round baking pan. In medium saucepan, combine first 3 ingredients. Stir in cranberries. Heat to a boil and reduce heat. Simmer 5 minutes or until cranberries pop open. Stir in pears. Pour into pan. Combine flour and 1/2 cup sugar (in medium bowl). Cut in margarine until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in oats and mix well. Add egg, mixing until moistened. Crumble evenly over fruit. Bake 30-35 minutes or until top is golden brown. 8 servings.

Magnets

I was in the mood to make a few simple magnets today. I found these cute resin angels, but wasn't quite sure what to do with them. Today I got out my craft stuff and found some magnets that I have had for years. I warmed up the hot glue gun and started gluing magnets to the back. I will give all the gals in the family one for Christmas. I had one left over, so I glued a piece of ribbon on it and mad an ornament for either a package or the tree.

As I was rummaging through the craft stuff, I found some left over flowers from an arrangement I made last year. I never throw any craft stuff away. I made a few spring time flower magnets. They came out better than I thought they would.

Cranberry Salsa

2 cups frozen cranberries, thawed
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
6 tablespoons honey
1 1/2 tablespoons tequila
1 1/2 tablespoons Triple Sec or other orange liqueur
4 fresh jalapeno peppers, seeded and minced
1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves

Place the cranberries in a blender; pulse until smooth; scrape into a bowl. Stir the lime juice, honey, tequila, Triple Sec, jalapeno peppers, and cilantro into the cranberries; cover and refrigerate overnight.

Overnight French Toast with Mixed Berry Topping

Perfect for Brunch--Start It the Night Before, Then Just Pop It in the Oven the Morning
Cooking Time: Bake 45 minutes

French Toast

Ingredients:

12 bread, day-old slices, sourdough, white, egg bread, cut into 1-inch diagonal pieces
8 oz. cream cheese, whipped
1 cup blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, or a mixture, fresh or frozen
8 eggs at room temperature
2 cups milk at room temperature
3 tbsp. C&H Pure Cane Granulated Sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Instructions:

Place half the bread in a generously buttered 9x13-inch baking dish. Using two spoons, scatter dollops of cream cheese over the bread, then sprinkle berries over the cream cheese. Place remaining bread over the berries. In a medium bowl, beat eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla. Pour egg mixture over the bread. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate overnight.

In the morning, preheat oven to 350°F. Remove foil-covered dish from refrigerator and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake 15 minutes longer, until toast is puffed and golden.

Mixed Berry Topping

Ingredients

1 cup blueberries, raspberries, blackberies, or a mixture, fresh or frozen
1 cup C&H Pure Cane Granulated Sugar
2 tbsp. cornstarch
1 cup water
1 tbsp. butter

Instructions:

Stir sugar, cornstarch, and water in a small saucepan and cook over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes or until slightly thickened. Stir in the berries and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes or until berries have burst. Add butter and stir until butter has melted. Keep warm. When ready to serve, pass the warm sauce in a small gravy boat or bowl for ladling over the French toast.

Serving Size: Serves 8

Cranberry Apple Crunch

2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and cut into 1/2 inch chunks
1 c. fresh or frozen cranberries
1/4 c. granulated sugar
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground allspice
1/2 c. uncooked oatmeal
1/2 c. firmly packed light brown sugar
2 tbsp. all purpose flour
3 tbsp. unsalted butter, softened

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine apples, cranberries, sugar, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and allspice in bowl. Transfer to 1 quart baking dish. combine oatmeal, brown sugar, flour and remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in small bowl. Rub or cut in butter until blended. Sprinkle over fruit. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes or until topping is browned and fruit is bubbly. Let stand for 15 minutes. Serve warm. Serves 4.

Apple Pie Filling

Apple Pie Filling

18 cups thinly sliced apples

3 tablespoons lemon juice
4 1/2 cups white sugar

1 cup cornstarch

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

10 cups water

In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice and set aside. Pour water into a Dutch oven over medium heat. Combine sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, salt and nutmeg. Add to water, stir well, and bring to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.

Add apples and return to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer until apples are tender, about 6 to 8 minutes. Cool for 30 minutes.

Ladle into 5 freezer containers, leaving 1/2 inch headspace. Cool at room temperature no longer than 1 1/2 hours.

Seal and freeze. Can be stored for up to 12 months.

A friend sent me this. It is a very cute idea. Great project for kids. I have no idea where she got the idea from. But I thought it was so cute I had to share. So if anyone knows please post it so I can give proper credit to the creator or publication.

A Sweet Shovel

What's the scoop? Just a sweets-laden toy shovel that's perfect for a kid's sandbox pals.

Materials:

Small bag of candy
Twist tie
Ribbon
Toy sand shovel
Paint pen

Instructions:

Close a small bag of candy with a twist tie. With a ribbon, tie it to the handle of a toy sand shovel.

Use a paint pen or permanent marker to write your message at the base of the shovel, just below the candy bag.

Cookie Cutter Ornaments

Here is a little project I did today. I got all the supplies at Michaels, only cost me around $10.00. I made 18 ornaments. They were made from mini cookie cutters. All I did was glue a few sprigs of pine, berries and gold pine cones. Used green and white gingham ribbon.

Cinnamon Ornaments

These homemade cinnamon ornaments make it fun and easy to decorate for the holidays. A great craft to try with kids!

Dough Recipe:

6 tablespoons applesauce
10 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves

Instructions:

Mix applesauce, cinnamon, and cloves until smooth and clay-like.

Sprinkle cinnamon on your tabletop and rolling pin, and roll the applesauce/spice mixture to about 1/8-inch thickness.

Use cookie cutters or a small knife to cut out your shapes.

With a small skewer make holes for hanging ribbons and draw details on the shapes.

Place cutouts on a cookie sheet and put in a 120 degrees F oven.

After 1-1/2 hours turn the oven off but leave the ornaments in overnight to dry.

Store in an airtight jar until ready to use.

Decorate with ribbons and hang on the Christmas tree or tie them to holiday gifts.

Makes about 20 fragrant ornaments.

Organizing yuk

It has been a rainy day, so I just organized all my craft stuff. I think I am going to need more containers. Trying to set up some kind of craft center in my tiny and cramped apartment. Even though I have been de-cluttering and donating things, it seems like there is still no room. Right now I have 2 short long book cases. I think I am going to have to get a tall one to make more space. I tried stacking them but they weren't very stable, beside they are just cheap ones. I would like to get one that I can paint to match my decor. Finally got all the horse books packed up. Will be sending them to their new owner in the next couple of weeks. Now my son has more storage room for his clothes and stuff.

Well I have decided to make a throw using my left over yarn from projects past. I am crocheting blocks with all the colors I have. Then I will be bordering them with either white or black not sure yet. This project will be done in strips. I don't know yet how big it will be. I will be working on it little by little. I will keep everyone updated as the project progresses. Who knows if this goes fast I might make a few for Christmas to give as gifts. I have all year to work on it. There will be pictures in the future.

De-Construction

This is an afghan that I made over 25 years ago. At the time I had a Indian/Aztec themed living room. It went perfect with the decor. Well my style has change quite a bit since then. I have been storing it for about 15 years. I have decided to take it apart and use it for other projects. I plan on using some of it in my patchwork afghan that will be going to my sister for Christmas. Since the afghan is full size. I will have lots of yarn. We will see what else I come up with.

Craft: Felt Mittens

Well school is on break for 10 days. I went to Michaels and got a few things that were 75% clearance. I plan to go back Sunday because all Christmas stuff will be 80% off and I have a 50% off coupon for a single item. I want to make these cute mittens that a friend sent to me. I will be sharing them with you.

Felt Mittens

Supplies:

paper and pen or pencil
red felt ( you could use another color if you want)
holiday buttons
scissors
Fiberfil stuffing
embroidery thread and needle
white ribbon

Int ructions:

Make a mitten shaped pattern with some paper and pen/pencil, and cut out.
Fold your felt in half and pin pattern.
Cut so you now have 2 mittens.
On 1 mitten hand sew holiday buttons and star shapes with embroidery floss.
Use a blanket stitch to sew mittens together. DO NOT stitch across the top of mitten yet.
Stuff with Fiberfil stuffing. Cut a 12 inch piece of ribbon, fold in half, insert in corner of mitten.
Use more Fiberfil across the mitten, starting at the ribbon, begin stitching across the top to close the mitten and secure outer Fiberfil.
As a variation of this, you can use the ribbon to connect the 2 mittens together and use that as a hanger.

Been busy

Well I have been de-cluttering my house. Right now I am working on the area that has all my cook books, crafts, and school supplies. I have a bunch of plastic protectors that I am putting my recipes and craft ideas in. I also have some small binders to organize those page protectors. I have also been cleaning out my closets. Donated the clothes. Thrown away a lot of useless paper work. I have a pile to be shredded.

Tomorrow when I get home from school I plan to go through my file cabinet. I have done it since we moved into our apartment 3 years ago. I also have a bunch of horse books which I will be sending to a friend of mine. Since I had to sell all the ponies and move from the ranch I won't be needing them any more. She is willing to go half on shipping. Unfortunately when the de-cluttering is done it will be time for Spring Cleaning.

I have also been putting together craft ideas and project that I want to do this year. These I will share as I do them.
